Against All Odds !!
My South East Asia trip started in Bali, Indonesia, and I never expected that I will meet one of the most remarkable, inspirational and down to earth human!!
I think when anyone realize that life is to short and you don’t know when something can happen… It might just bring out the best in everyone!! Life life to your fullest potential!!
Nusa Lebongan (Indonesia) – Being born with defects because the doctors in Indonesia gave the wrong medicine to his mother, left this man without two arms and one of his feet. At this point many people will give up… Try to live of family members or just beg on the street for some money to buy some food or alcohol to drown there sorrows.
When we arrived at the hotel in Mushroom Beach, I noticed this guy sitting on a bench. He stood up, walk to us, greeted us friendly and asked us if you want a room for the night. After about 5min of talking about what we are looking for and what our budget is he showed us the room that was available. We got to the stairs and he insisted that we have to walk first because we are his guests. He was climbing the stair just as fast as we did, opened the door to our room and showed us around. It was an amazing place and we told him that we will stay for a few nights.
He showed us the balcony where we can sit, chill, eat and drink beer… But there were only two chairs at the table… So he rushed off the other side of the balcony grabbed a chair and carried it to us. We wanted to help but he still said… No, you are my guests!
To be honest, I only noted that this guy was missing his two arms and did not even noticed him missing foot.. After a day I saw it for the first time…
After we settled in, we got downstairs looking for snorkeling gear. And there he was, asking us what we want to pay, walked to the fins and took out pair by pair as we were looking for the best fit. We then talked a bit about some snorkeling and diving spots… He said that he cant take us out for scuba diving because he send his staff for training. Then he started to tell us how he scuba dive and the things he have seen around the island while diving. Just a quick reminder… No arms and only one full leg!!
The next day he showed us his family 🙂 Wife and a very beautiful child. He explained to us how he got his beautiful wife and started his own family. Made a lot of jokes as he explained their relationship.
So after all his disabilities he is not just running a hotel, have a family and enjoy some diving on the island… He started telling us on how he was backpacking, how they try to rip him off because he was a tourist and how he was drinking beer and shots with some Aussies in pubs as he traveled.
As our time in Nusa Lebongan came to an end we needed to organize a ferry to our next locations. And once gain he said he will sort things out for us, got out his cellphone and without any fingers called his friend and organized the ferry for us.
We got up on our last morning, packed all our stuff and went downstairs to wait for our lift. We got a chance to finally speak to this amazing man…. And just when we thought we have seen and heard all of it, he took out a cigarette, took his lighter and lid up his his own cigarette!! We were totally amazed!!! Elmor was sitting there trying to speak, but was totally speechless!!
So when you come to a obstacle somewhere in your life…. Its not over!! You just need to get up, face the music and move on with your life!!! This incredible man showed us that anything is possible if you decide that your problem or disability is not the end of the world!! I wish that some people can just spend 10min in his pressance and be inspired as we were!
