The Europe Experience
Its been an incredible adventure until this point. The things I’ve seen and experienced will stay with me for the rest of my life. Before I started this journey I intending to find places I have not seen and experience cultures thats is different from back home. All my expectations has been overcome and my journey through our beautiful planet is something I cant always express in words.
I have just completed my second continent, Europe, in Istanbul and man what a great feeling it was. It has been a though week and has really pushed my body and mind to new limits I did not knew existed. At some point my body said no and my mind said yes!! Thats when I just continued and arrived in Istanbul much earlier than initially expected.
When I cycled that last 500m of my second continents, I started to develop a smile that nothing could wipe off at that moment in time. All the feelings, memories, emotions and experiences flashed through my mind and then I stopped in front of the Blue Mosque. I just stood there smiling and enjoyed that moment. Its something you cant explain and was one of the most amazing feelings in my life.
Europe has been hard and very tough. You might think it get easier, because I get fitter, but it really gets harder in so many ways. When I get to a point where Im feeling too comfortable, I just set new and higher goals and make sure I achieve them. The feeling when you accomplish the next level is something I live for.
Europe took me through new extreme environments… Snow, rain, cold, hot, off-road, traffic, remote areas and so much more. The people has been amazing on the road (the locals), always trying to start a conversation to find out what Im doing in their country. Through Europe I received coffee, tea, food, accommodation and more importantly insights in their cultures. All this from random people that did not know me at all. The kindness I received until this point is remarkable. This is exactly what I wished I would get and want to show and share with my experiences with everyone out there. Places are not always as bad as it seems. We always just see the worse in the news and that can be so deceiving.
My experience in Europe was that people just became friendlier and kinder the more I moved towards Asia. Most times people cant speak a word of English but they make sure I feel comfortable and try to help wherever I am.
I met some characters 🙂 This is always great to experience and being openminded is very important. I don’t judge and try to see their point of view and what made them who they are. Every person in the world have a story and their history have a big impact on who they become. Most of the times things where completely out of their hands.
I see things on a weekly basis that gives me goosebumps or a lump in my throat. To see some things are hard and makes me appreciate things I took for granted on a daily basis in my life back home. Its the small things in life that we take for granted and means the world for someone else. EVERYTHING we have is a luxury. Im going to say that again. EVERYTHING we have is a luxury…. even your soap in the shower. We complain about politics, fuel prices, inflation, things not being equal, etc etc etc… but don’t think about how other people have to life their daily lives and the struggles they have.
It still amazes me on how things change from country to country. Not just the people, cultures or road, but the terrain Im cycling through. When I step over a border, into another country, things are totally different. I love it!!!
So…. I made it through two continents, Australia and Europe, and now Im really getting into the real business… going into Asia!! This is going to be something I have been dreaming about for such a long time. Its going to be tuff, hard and I will have to develop a new kind of patience (which I believe Im already improved a lot). I will have to work much harder than what I have done in the last eight and a half months. But man o man… Im so looking forward to it.
Its this huge challenges that makes me a stronger person and thats one reason why Im doing it. Pushing myself to new limits, set new crazy goals, suffer, laugh, cry…and work my way through all of them… this is what you can expect from Asia!!
Get ready Asia… The South African on a bike is about to visit your countries and is seeking to experience and learn from your cultures!!
