Vang Vieng – 4000 Islands
After a great 10 day stay in Vang Vieng it is time to move on get to the much spoken about 4000 Islands before I head to Cambodia.
They say journey is 17hours.. Another long one… but had longer transits between cities in the last month and a half.
This one consists out of the following:
1 – Minibus Bus from Vang Vieng to Vientiane
2 – Sleeper Bus from Vientiane to Pakse
3 – Bus from Pakse to Hat Xai Khun
4 – Ferry from Hat Xai Khun to Don Det ( one of the Islands of 4000 Islands)
The Minbus from Vang Vieng towards Vientiane was much better that my last one from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng… one of that moments in time when you actually feel… today I might die…
In Vientiane jumped onto the sleeper bus… One thing about the sleeper busses… You are sharing the sleeper bed with someone else! So was hoping for some good luck with the person that I will be sharing it with. I was at the top deck, right at the front (which I thought would be really nice, because I will be able to see the road and the way the driver is driving) and then a elderly French guy join me in the very narrow bed. At least he was a skinny guy!
Rather uncomfortable situation when waking up next to a elderly guy and his bum are against your leg and don’t have any space to move away… So at this point I was struggling to sleep with the French guy that’s sleeping like its his own bed back at home. Well at least I have a clear view of the road and my iPad so I can continue to read the book of Riaan Manser – Around Africa on my bicycle. And just as interesting as Riaan’s book, so was the view of the road!!
At some point I was hoping to get tired while reading, but the book is to exiting… So I will read a paragraph or two and then scanning the road as the bus where hooting, swerving past potholes and dodging people/busses/trucks/cars/animals like Juan de Villiers through the All Blacks defense!
When I say animals I mean…. Cows, Pigs, Dogs, Cats and the more interesting Water Buffalos!! Just after sunrise there where two piglets crossing the road and at the last possible moment…. and the bus tried to sidestep them as well… The one was OK (running past the right side of the bus) and I still don’t know about the other one. It looked like the bus driver could at least try to drive over it, with it directly in the middle of the bus! So hopefully the little guy got such a big fright that he froze and we went safely over him without hurting him.
Finally got a new Credit Card, but could not draw money at two ATM’s on my way to 4000 Islands. Now I just hope that there will be a ATM on the small island on Don Det! With only 110 000 kip (about R120) left its going to an interesting day or two if I cant get my card to work and if I can’t find another ATM!
As we drive more to the South of Laos the landscape is starting to flatten out, less green and the road are much better than in the North.
We arrived on the Island after 23hours on busses! Absolutely amazing!!! And yet again the long transit was worth it!!
Got our accommodation… For the a staggering 50 000 kip.. About R60… And is sharing.. So its just R30 to stay over per night! Rooms are basic but have an amazing view!!
After a month and a half we finally had a decent plate of pork!! Just like a good “spit braai” at home!! Nice food and enjoy the plate with a nice Mojito Bucket!!
