“What are you chasing De Bruyn?” – June 2013
It was a hot summer day in Cape Town and we were a few friends chilling on the beach. I was about to head off and start the Around 7 Continents adventure. During that beautiful sunny day one of my friends turned to me and asked, “buddy, what are you chasing?”
People now say… “It’s been a long time, almost three years on the adventure!” My reply normally is “Wow, yes it is, can’t believe it” But what has really happened in the last few years since I started the Around 7 Continents adventure.
Before I climbed onto the Airbus A380, heading for Australia, I had all these massive dreams, plans and thoughts in my head on how the next few years will play out:
– Whats gonna happen?
– What good things and what bad ones will I encounter?
– Who am I going to meet?
But I think the deeper and more important questions was:
– What kind of person am I about to become?
– What will I learn through my world exploration?
– What will people, cultures and other countries teach me to become a better person?
In the beginning I saw a massive challenge in front of me by traveling 80 000km through 7 continents… by myself, human-powered and without any help. But in my head I never feared the long road ahead or things I was about to encounter. I was excited to fully experience and learn what each different continent will through at me.
The best part of any adventure (does not matter where you are) is meeting people, experiencing different cultures and see things you are not use to in your own home country. Every new discovery is going into your memory… and this is something nobody can ever take away. Whether it was drinking tea & having food with people in Iran, trying to communicate with locals in Mongolia, drinking wine with an awesome old guy in Croatia while waiting for bicycle parts or having a flat tire… and meeting my girlfriend.
Traveling is something every single person need to do. I personally believe its one of the most important things in life. Every single traveler, adventurer or explorer I have met along the way had their own stories and experiences… stories they share, but you will never really know how that exact moment played off. But in their eyes you can see it meant something to them and it is engraved in their mind.
Adventuring, exploration or travel make you grow as a person. I’m not saying growing older, but growing as a person. You learn things that is becoming part of you and make you think differently about many things we take for granted in our daily lives.
In June 2013, someone ask me “What are you chasing De Bruyn?” At that moment my reply was “I’m chasing my dreams”.
Today I can say that it was and still is very true what my reply was, but there is more to that question that I understood at that exact moment.
It’s one of the best questions in life, even though people don’t really recognize it when it actually comes out of their mouths. It’s a much deeper and personal question that can make you think for hours, days and even years.
So what am I chasing??
Almost three years down the line I would now say… “I’m chasing personal dreams & Adventure, to learn from other people, knowledge, happiness, trying new things on a daily basis, to learn more about myself, enjoying life, to be the best in what I do, working harder and most important to make new friends around the world… does not matter what the colour of their skin, country-, religion- or background they come from.”
If you ask me that question now, I would probably return that question and ask it back to you…
“What are you chasing?”
